One benefit of winter and not driving my 944, is creating a 'dear santa' list of car parts for next year. I've been thinking about doing some sort of exhaust change of sorts and I'm here for your opinions!
First, a video of what sounds like currently, as of yesterday night:
Now, because doing a full catback exhaust change would be unwise for the foreseeable future(unless otherwise told or more funds become available), I'm limiting it to just the muffler and nothing else.
Before I show you all some possible options, lemme tell you what kinda sound I would like to have and what sound I would not, and hopefully you all can help me determine which muffler(s) fit the bill!
I would like an exotic-sounding muffler for my exotic-like 4-cylinder, absolutely no rasp or tinny-like sounding, a deep and powerful sound that's not too obnoxious and loud, I'm looking for tone rather than loudness.
So! Here's some videos to give ourselves some ideas:
1. Straight Pipe(I don't know about this one)
2. Borla Muffler
3. Magnaflow
4. Dansk
So, what are we thinking Oppo? I'm thinking Dansk, but lemme know what you think!

I agree on Dansk. Has a certain racey note. Is the squeak in your vid a worn TOB? That's one of the reasons I'm doing a clutch job instead of exhaust mod over winter...

The Borla XR-1 is a wicked muffler. If you have the cash, it sounds AMAZING with a Lindsey Racing MSDS Header, and exhaust system, with the Borla.

The first straight pipe example is just the header/manifold it sounds like, since the muffler is still there. I am a fan of the straight pipe. I like the rasp.

TOB? Not sure what that is, but it's my AC clutch pulley or something like that.

Kind of joking, but it is a straight through Glasspack Muffler. They are super cheap like less than $40.

The Dansk is just too subdued. The straight pipe just has this old exotic vibe to it. Unrefined and badass.

While exotically true, I'd prefer a more modern-like exotic sound?

More tone, less rasp, more sound.

Here's the thing with 944's. You can't make them sound good. You can spend as much as you want on an exhaust but it will still sound raspy and meh. It's not a good sounding car unfortunately, and I think the dansk is the best one out there. But it's expensive. And you money is much better spent on other things.
However, what I personally recommend, and gives a pretty good exhaust note, is gutting the catalytic converter, or welding a straight pipe through that, and leaving the stock muffler. So basically a straight pipe up until the stock muffler.

But straight pipe that will be too loud based on those videos. :(
Is there a way to quiet it down, and wouldn't there be some kinda loss in power or torque? Could I maybe weld in a high-flow cat?

Throw out bearing. And it's 99% just a belt.

Oh ok. And sorry for the cryptic acronym, it means throwout bearing. Kind of similar noise from my car. But I'm glad it's not.
Also, the 8V sounds nice IMO. Throaty and raspy in a good way.

Straight pipe ALL THE WAY. Best sound, by far.
If that's too loud, which it probably will be, though, I would say to go with the Borla. The Dansk sounds a little to tuner-y to me.

First fix squeaky belt. sounds like at pulley or tensioner needs changed.
Next 4 cylinder engines all sound raspy no matter what you do to the exhaust aftermarket wise. Its just the way that 4 bangers are. Personally i like no cats on my vehicles but that is just me. I think it sounds good and smells good as well.
If it was up to me i would make it the same as my Miata is. I have stock header to a straight-pipe to my straight through Vibrant performance muffler.
But out of those choices i think borla was my favorite

It's too loud straight-piped. What do you mean tuner-y? What does that mean.

It's the AC pulley, I'll fix it after winter.
Don't no cats increase flow, and power/torque? I've only got 150hp, mind you. And I like the lower end torque the car has currently. But yes it does smell good.

Increases flow and exhaust velocity. Can bump hp up a bit and some torque. You wont feel that profound of a difference. I found my Miata revs a little faster now but speed and butt dyno dont show too much. I just think it sounds a lot better. IMO

Figured as much. Tuner-y means that it sounds like a Japanese Tuner, or, for lack of a better term, a ricer. Not saying a 944 is a ricer by any means. But the Dansk sounds a little too subdued to me. I think the Borla gives it the slight growl that it needs.

Just FYI straight pipe by definition means, nothing from the exhaust manifold back. Having a muffler at the end doesn't make it a straight pipe. I've heard it first hand, the cat delete + original muffler are fine for street use and not too loud at all. It actually sounds pretty good and personally I think it's the best way to make a 944 sound good.
if anything there will probably be a power increase because 30 year old cats and mufflers aren't efficient and will cause a blockage in the exhaust system. You could probably put a high flow cat but with no exhaust note difference. Not worth it in my opinion

What did Aaron have? I can't for the life of me remember what it was..
Wouldn't blockage(preventing flow and increasing backpressure be good though? I thought for N/A motors, more back pressure is ideal compared to FI motors that desire more flow for more power and such?

He had a completely straight pipe from manifold back for a majority of the time but he did have a straight pipe with the stock muffler until it fell off. The stock muffler sounded good without a cat.
The honest truth? You probably won't notice a thing. Read up online but most of it is placebo effect really. I doubt you will notice a thing. I've driven 944's with no exhaust, some exhaust, and full exhaust, and I haven't felt a difference.
